Rüsselsheim.  With its world premieres at this year's IAA Frankfurt International Motor Show (press days: September 10-11; public days: September 12-22) Opel demonstrates that the automotive future is rich in variety. The IAA is where the new Opel Corsa, the Grandland X Hybrid and the new Opel Astra will make their debut – perfectly tailored to customer needs. The new Opel Corsa is not only available as an efficient, classic combustion-engine version, but for the first time also as a battery-electric Corsa-e – with a purely electric range of up to 330 kilometres according to WLTP1.

The second world premiere at the Opel stand D31 in Hall 11.0 is the new Grandland X Hybrid4 with all-wheel drive. The plug-in hybrid combines the power of a 1.6 turbocharged petrol engine and two electric motors for a system output of up to 300hp. Preliminary WLTP2 fuel consumption (weighted, combined) is 1.4-1.3 l/100 km with 32-29 g/km CO2 (NEDC3: 1.5 l/100 km, 35-34 g/km CO2).

The third newcomer in the group is the new Opel Astra. With its outstanding aerodynamics, a completely new generation of engines and newly developed transmissions, the Opel Astra sets standards in terms of efficiency and low emissions. Compared to its predecessor, CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 21 per cent (Astra five-door 1.2 Direct Injection Turbo, 96 kW/130 hp, NEDC4 fuel consumption: urban 5.3-5.2 l/100 km, extra-urban 3.9-3.8 l/100 km, combined 4.4-4.3 l/100 km, 101-99 g/km CO2). This puts the new Astra at the top of the compact class – and makes it the most efficient Astra of all time.

Last but not least, the new Opel Zafira Life makes its first appearance in front of a German trade fair audience in Frankfurt. Twenty years after the success began with the first generation in 1999, the story is now continuing with a newly developed fourth-generation model: the Zafira Life comes in a new dimension – in three vehicle lengths, highly versatile with space for up to nine people and with top comfort and assistance systems.

“At the IAA we at Opel will be showing how the future of the automobile will become reality”, said Opel CEO, Michael Lohscheller. “We focus on the customer and their needs. Instead of prescribing the way forward, we offer the entire drive portfolio – from ground-breaking electric and hybrid drive to efficient combustion engines. All new models are equipped with state-of-the-art technologies and already available to order.”

Sporty, stylish, economical – and electric for the first time: New Opel Corsa

The new 4.06-metre long Opel Corsa is more modern, dynamic and efficient than ever. It comes with particularly economical petrol and diesel engines featuring power outputs ranging from 55kW (75hp) to 96kW (130hp) (NEDC4 fuel consumption: urban 5.5-3.7 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.2-2.9 l/100 km, combined 4.7-3.2 l/100 km, 106-85 g/km CO2; WLTP5 combined: 6.2-4.0 l/100 km, 140-105 g/km CO2). The sixth generation of the bestseller is also available for the first time as a purely battery-electric Corsa-e with a 50kWh battery pack, 100kW (136hp) output and a range of up to 330 kilometres (WLTP1). Moderate fuel consumption and an engaging drive are characteristic of all powertrain options and the exemplary emission values reach all the way to zero when driving the Corsa-e.

The sporty overall impression is matched by the reduced weight – the lightest Corsa even undercuts the thousand kilo mark – and the low seating position of the driver. Active and passive safety are also at a high level, and Opel engineers have finely tuned the chassis and the steering. In the new Corsa, Opel offers technologies and assistance systems that customers otherwise only know from higher vehicle classes. A real highlight is the adaptive, glare-free IntelliLux LED® matrix light, which Opel is making widely available for the first time in the mainstream small car segment. Other Corsa innovations include sensor-controlled Flank Guard, 180-degree panoramic rear view camera and automatic parking assistant, as well as systems such as Forward Collision Alert with Automatic Emergency Braking and pedestrian detection, intelligent cruise control and Lane Keep Assist.

Corsa drivers and passengers are well connected and entertained with the new range of infotainment systems comprising Multimedia Radio, Multimedia Navi with 7.0-inch colour touchscreen and the top-of-the-line Multimedia Navi Pro with 10.0-inch colour touchscreen, up to the fully digitised cockpit in the Corsa-e. In addition, the Corsa also offers the optional new telematics service "Opel Connect" with live navigation, a direct link to breakdown assistance, emergency call and many other functions.

Charge and go: New Opel Grandland X Hybrid4 with all-wheel drive

In addition to the new Corsa-e, the next model in the Opel electric offensive is the Grandland X with state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid technology and all-wheel drive. The propulsion system of the Grandland X Hybrid4 includes a WLTP-certified 147kW (200hp) 1.6-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine. The four-cylinder unit was specially adapted to the hybrid application. In addition, there is an electric drive system with two electric motors - 80kW (109hp) at the front, 83kW (113hp) at the rear - and a 13.2kWh lithium-ion battery. The front electric motor is coupled to an electrified eight-speed automatic transmission. The second electric motor, inverter and differential are integrated into the electrically powered rear axle to provide all-wheel traction on demand.

The Grandland X Hybrid4 will offer four driving modes – electric, hybrid, AWD and Sport – allowing drivers to tailor the car’s characteristics to their wishes or to specific driving conditions. For example, choosing the hybrid mode allows the car to automatically select its most efficient method of propulsion, with the possibility of switching to electric mode for zero-emission driving when reaching a city centre – enabling the car to cover up to 59 kilometres in pure electric mode with zero emissions in the WLTP2 driving cycle (67-69 km according to NEDC3). Selecting AWD mode activates the electrified rear axle for maximum traction on all kinds of roads. In order to further improve efficiency, the Grandland X Hybrid4 features a regenerative braking system to recover the energy produced under braking or deceleration.

Up to 21 per cent less CO2: Most efficient Opel Astra ever

With a completely new generation of engines and transmissions, the Opel Astra sets standards for low emissions. The Astra’s ultra-modern three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines ensure lively driving performance and top driving comfort with optimum noise attenuation. A counter-rotating balance shaft in the engine block offsets vibrations. The compact, three-cylinder, turbo petrol and diesel units are available with 1.2 to 1.5-litre displacements. With power outputs extending from 77kW (105hp) to 107kW (145hp) and maximum torque from 195 to 300 Newton metres, they achieve an excellent balance between performance and efficiency (NEDC4 fuel consumption: urban 6.3-3.9 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.3-3.1 l/100 km, combined 5.1-3.4 l/100 km, 116-90 g/km CO2; WLTP5 combined: 6.1-4.3, 141-112 g/km CO2; preliminary figures). The base power units have a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. A new stepless automatic transmission and a smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic also contribute to lower consumption and high comfort.

The Astra also leads the way in terms of aerodynamics. With a drag coefficient of 0.26 for the Astra hatchback as well as the Sports Tourer estate, the new compact Opel is the most efficient Astra ever and one of the most aerodynamic cars in its class. In total, the aerodynamic optimisation of the new Astra saves 4.5g of CO2 per kilometre in the WLTP cycle.

The new Astra is equally exemplary in terms of comfort, assistance and infotainment systems. The new front camera is smaller, but more powerful than before thanks to a faster processor. The digital rear view camera available in conjunction with the new Multimedia Navi Pro infotainment system is also more powerful. The view of the traffic behind the vehicle on the monitor is more distinct and precise; the contrasts are more visible in the dark. Intelligent, glare-free IntelliLux LED® matrix light is also on board. Compatible smartphones in the compact class model can now also be charged inductively via wireless charging. The new Astra turns into a concert hall with the optional Bose high-end sound system. And driving in the cold season is more pleasant and safer with the heated windscreen, another comfort feature available in the Astra for the first time.

Multi-purpose van in top form: New Opel Zafira Life

For 20 years now, attractive, flexible and practical vans have been named Zafira. This credo will be continued at the 2019 IAA with the Opel Zafira Life. The fourth model generation is available in three lengths – the 4.60 metre “Small”, the 4.95 m “Medium” and the 5.30 m “Large” – each of which comes with up to nine seats. Most versions of the spacious van are less than 1.90 m high and can therefore access typical underground garages – important for use as a hotel shuttle, but also for private drivers who want to park their car everywhere without restrictions.

The new van also features a small turning circle, good handling and optionally two sensor-controlled sliding doors that open electrically with a movement of the foot – a comfort feature unique in this market segment. In the interior, the "S" version of the Zafira Life already offers up to 3,600 litres of loading volume, which can be increased to a maximum of 4,900 litres in the "L". In addition, configurations with up to eight leather seats further increase comfort. And to top it all off, luxurious “Lounge“ trim is available with a movable table, plenty of legroom and 48 cm wide seat cushions in the rear.

The Zafira Life meets all demands – from the versatile interiors, high comfort and sophisticated driver assistance systems, to state-of-the-art infotainment, head-up display, camera and radar-based automatic speed control as well as IntelliGrip electronic traction control. The advanced technology is paired with a cool look, balanced proportions, short overhangs and the typical Opel fascia. Driver and passengers also benefit from a two-piece panorama glass-roof and an opening window in the tailgate as options.
