ACF Fiorentina Win 2018 OPEL CUP in Mainz

• Football tournament with European flavour: 1. FSV Mainz 05 host ACF Fiorentina and Athletic Bilbao
• Debut: Opel as presenter and namesake of the inaugural edition of the tournament

Rüsselsheim. ACF Fiorentina are the winners of the inaugural edition of the OPEL CUP. The visiting teams from ACF Fiorentina and Athletic Bilbao along with hosts 1. FSV Mainz 05 were cheered by 10,000 spectators despite the extremely hot weather. All three teams delighted the fans and put on some impressive display.

The OPEL CUP took place for the very first time today with the teams facing each other in a round-robin format. Each match lasted for 45 minutes. Hosts 1. FSV Mainz 05, who will kick off their tenth Bundesliga season in succession later this month, were joined by Italian outfit ACF Fiorentina and Athletic Bilbao from Spain.

Opel extended its commitment to football by agreeing to be the presenter and namesake of the OPEL CUP. The Rüsselsheim-based carmaker has held the naming rights to the stadium in Mainz since 2016 and has been a 1. FSV Mainz 05 exclusive partner since 2012. In addition, Opel also promotes grassroots football with the BVB FAMILY CUP, in which children play alongside adults. The company is also a premium sponsor and exclusive sleeve sponsor of Borussia Dortmund. And Opel enjoys especially close ties to the coach of UEFA Champion League finalists FC Liverpool: Jürgen Klopp has been a brand ambassador since 2012 and is a passionate Insignia driver. The Reds kick off their Premier League season with a home game against West Ham United on Saturday.

Elsewhere, the 2018/19 Bundesliga season will start on Friday, August 24. The two Opel teams will both start their campaigns on August 26 when Dortmund host RB Leipzig and Mainz welcome VfB Stuttgart to the OPEL ARENA.
